Classic Cycles...

I've been working for my friend Dave (see pic) at his shop Classic Cycles Ltd. in Baptistown, NJ on Saturdays for the past month now. Its certainly been one of the best things I've ever had going. I get to build wheels & work on amazing classic british bikes, hang with two of the greatest dudes ever, Dave & Bob, I get to learn about all sorts of vintage Brit bikes - inside & out and I also bring in some extra scratch to spend on my own projects. Its a bit of a haul at around an hour & 20 minutes or so but it's definately worth it. I'm looking forward to the days when its not 15 degrees when I leave my pad so I can ride up & back because theres some decent roads between my house & the shop.

This could officially be considered a shameless plug for Classic Cycles but I guarantee, if you have a vintage british machine or are looking to get into a project bike & need a little help or even if you're looking to buy a fully restored bike - you need to give us a holler. Dave knows every inch of these bikes & has a shitload of high quality parts in stock. Come by & he'll gladly give you the tour. Nevermind the ugly tattooed weirdo in the back wrenching on stuff.

New Narrowglide and Zito built spoolie

Zito cleaned up the wheel so well I couldnt leave the front end raw. 3 hours later I was happy with the result.

Gotta get new bearings for the spool the ones in there measure about .780 instead of .75o and mount the headlight. I wanna thank Travis for responding to my post about lookin to buy a narrowglide. It was a good deal and Im happy with what I got. Also thanks to Zito for buildin me a killer spool in no time flat

Shovel Slim Down

This was the shov a couple days ago. Wide glide wide Z's and five gallon tanks.Then I picked up these gems from Zito and the shovel was dubbed the "Peyote Sunrise"
Took the narrow glide off my ironhead and scored the bars from Nick's in Jersey.

Gotta loctite everything make a rear tank mount then work on the fender. Should be pretty cool when its done.

My bud sent me that pic of me doing that stair set. I think I was like 17 in that pic. The rest are somewhat recent. Fuckin crazy to think that silly plank of wood with wheels has been part of my life for so long. I dont fuck with gaps or stairs anymore since I blew my ACL out & had it fixed. Skating transition & miniramps has kept me plenty happy. Sometimes I miss those hot summer nights fucking around on a manual pad or a ledge but I'll take a sweet bowl or mini over that shit any day.

Built this wheel up for my man Mike D last night. Got the rim & hub from my weekend job at Classic Cycles LTD in Baptistown NJ (classic brit bike shop). Rim was laced to an 8" Triumph front hub in the most completely wrong pattern you could get. Some hippy had a belly full of shrooms when he laced it. Dave scrounged up the hub which seems to be an OG chromed steel flat track deal. Buchanans supplied the spokes & thankfully I didnt have to trim any down for once.

If anyone reading this blog needs wheels built, email me & we'll work it out. If you just have a rim & a spool, I can order the spokes & build it up for you. I got lucky with this used rim for D's wheel but I will say that about 3 out of 5 used rims are whacked out, so beware of those swap meet hoops you see - someone unlaced it for a reason, most likely because someone slammed a pothole with it.

Best days

This was a shot from blue ridge parkway. It was one of the best days of riding I've ever had. I think I rode something like 18 hours total this day. I was riding solo down to Georgia to visit some friends & rode the mountains all the way. Not soon after this shot, shit went from pure heaven to near hell. I was literally feeling completely high from how insane the riding was. Between the fact that I was going for hours on end without tapping my brakes or seeing another vehicle & the epic views - I was blown away.

After I took this shot, which does this view no justice whatsoever, it got dark. Real dark. Real fast. Then the fog started creeping in & it got pretty cold. I'm not talking a little fog here, it was so bad, I couldnt even see my front tire. At this point on blue ridge, its very steep & curvy. The only way I could move forward was to just ride directly next to the yellow line. I could only idle along in 1st at around 6mph. On top of this, I was just about out of fuel. Coming from NJ where you can find a gas station every 25 feet, I kept thinking - no sweat, I'll just get off at the next exit & get gas...

Trouble was, riding in the center of the road, I couldnt see the side of the road or any signs or exits or anything. After a long while of idling along in the blinding fog, I finally got down below the clouds I was riding in & lucky me, the fog turned into a downpour. Well, at least I could see - sort of. So I see a sign for Transylvania, NC. Figured I could find some vampires to tell me where the nearest gas station is. No deal - it was another hour of winding mountain roads in the middle of no where. I was almost at 190 miles since the last fill up & I kept thinking I was going to run out of fuel so anytime I was going downhill I just put it in neutral & coasted.

I passed a few trailer homes that had several huge lifted late 70s pickups complete with gun racks & huge rebel flags. Dudes were just chillin' out front in the rain, in pitch black night. I was thinking if I run out of fuel, shit could get real wierd in a hurry, so I keep pushin on. I have yet to see any sort of civilization - no street lights, curbs, fire hydrants - anything. Finally, I come to a somewhat legit road & suburban area & make my way to the only gas station I saw in 210 miles... and its fucking closed! It was completely dark - not one light on in the whole place. I was ready to just sleep right there at the pump under the canopy until they opened but I noticed the pumps were the modern type that took a credit card so I swiped & thank god - the shit worked. I topped my tank off til it was overflowing in case I got in a bind like that again.

A quick check of my map showed me I was finally on a road that was listed & made my way to the highway - found a hotel & finally got to bed by around 3 am. I was so damn strung out from the whole day, I couldnt chill out. I was delerious. So stoked that I rode so many awesome miles, still freaked about the crazy change in weather & almost running out of fuel. I layed there with my eyes pinned open for at least another 2 hours after a hot shower. I think I slept about 2 hours total & was on the road again to my final destination - Acworth, GA.

I'm planning on riding out to CA for the born free show & biltwell 500 in June & I'm wondering how many insane days like that one will happen. At least I know now to get down off the smokey mountains before dark. At least I got to shoot that rad pic of the sun setting over them on that crazy day.

Ironheads in my head...

I never thought I'd own a Harley. I've had a few Japanese bikes, several British bikes but never saw an American one in my future. Growing up, I had a lot of uncles into all sorts of different bikes. My uncle's Steve, Walt & Frank always had Jap bikes - all through the 80s I saw XSs, CBs, KZs & Frank even had a couple Goldwings. My uncle Mike had some shitty beat up Jap bikes of his own but eventually got himself a used sporty & became a member of the POWMIA. They would have some parties I would never forget. I remember Mike taking me out on the sporty when I was probably 8 years old & thinking how different it sounded & felt than the other bikes my uncles had. I didnt give a shit though - I was 8 & wanted a dirt bike. I was almost 10 years from having a license so what the fuck would I do with a street bike anyhow?

Mikes club had a party at my uncle Franks who had a good bit of land & I remember there being a shitload of scary dudes, loud ass bikes & insanity in general. Frank got out an old CB750 from behind the shed for everyone to thrash on. Within a minute there was a dirt oval in his field where everyone was thrashing on the Honda & eventually their own bikes. Crashes on almost every lap. Everyone was having a blast. As a kid - there was not one thing cooler than this day sometime in the mid/late 80s. Who knew Id be doing the same shit in Mexico almost 20 years later?

Of course after quite a few teen years in the dirt, I finally got my license & went down to uncle Frank to see if he had any spare bikes laying around. He had this old barn with a pile of bikes in there. He said 'Sure, go in there & see if there's any that look complete'. I remember flipping through the pile of bikes like old records at a thrift store. I flipped about 4 or 5 bikes & came to a sweet little honda. A '72 CL450 - Scrambler - high pipes & all. I pulled it out & he said 'That thing hasnt been run in years but I'll bet we getting running tonight'. Sure enough - air in the tires, clean out the bowls & jets, fresh gas & a little zap to the battery & she was purring like new.

I rode the balls off that bike. The brakes barely worked & it vibrated like no other but it was plenty quick, looked cool & I was finally on my own bike - on the street. It wasnt until then that I realized how fucking douchey Harley guys were. All I had known in the past was my uncle Mikes sporty & his insane club. I knew those dudes were the real deal & rad as fuck but what the hell was with these other assholes thinking their shit doesnt stink because they took a huge loan out for a harley? One guy said 'Honda eh? So when are ya gettin a REAL bike?'. I said 'This bike is pretty real man - it just hauled my ass about 300 miles today alone'

So of course, I figured harley = fucking total douchebag. I got myself another free Honda - a shadow & rode the ,balls off that thing as well. Everyday - everywhere. Then eventually got myself a speed triple, my first british bike. I always wanted a classic bonneville because they looked so much more refined than the japanese copies of the 70s but I couldnt deny that the speed triple blew my mind on a daily basis. Power, handling, brakes, cornering, fuel injection, adjustable suspension. I rode that thing everywhere as far south as Georgia & north as Toronto. Track days, drag raced it, rode it off road, rode in the snow & put about 36k miles on it before I sold it. Unfortunately, the one thing it never had was soul.

I built my 70 Trophy from a basketcase shitheap I got from a friend. Finally, I got to experience a bike with soul again. It wasnt since my 72 Honda that I felt that. I missed that feeling. Sure, it cant do all the things a modern sport bike can but goddamn if it didnt have something special going on. After building my Trophy, I ended up meeting a few other guys who were in the same boat as me. Had all sorts of bikes, built themselves an old custom one & was really digging it.

It wasnt until then did I realize that the 'real deal' guys on harleys were around the whole time even though the douchebag version was obviously more abundant. I met guys with old harleys, ironheads, panheads, knuckles & even a guy with wierd little flathead. These guys didnt think their shit didnt stink. Hell, half of them stunk like shit just like me. These guys owned a few harleys as well as hondas & triumphs & BMWS & any other goddamn thing that had two wheels & they loved them all just the same. No shit?! So harley owners who arent elitist pricks? Who knew? These guys were just straight up motorcycle fiends like me, no matter what the name on the tank said.

I had a 63 BSA A50 lined up as my next project but realized that I would either build it almost exactly like my Trophy or build it as a scrambler. I started thinking, if I put a shitload of time & money into this bike, I sure as hell wont want to beat on it in the woods. Thats when I decided to buy a new scrambler & sell my triple. The new scram takes a regular beating & I dont feel too bad about it. So now, not knowing what to do with the BSA, I sold the project & eyed up some ironheads. I had fell in love with the early, tin primary XLCH. Thats what sparked me finally caving in & getting my first american bike. Sure, now the dudes at work busted my balls & said Id be wearing a leather flamed bandanna & fringed chaps next but I knew exactly what this Ironhead was going to be like when its done & it didnt matter what they said.

Long story short - ride what you want, ignore douchebags & have fun with every sickle - no matter what country the factory that made it is in, its the builder/rider/owner & the bike's history that gives it soul, not the badge on the tank.
